What Do the Records Look Like?
- The 1885 Wisconsin State Census records are handwritten in bound volumes. There are two basic forms used:
1. Inhabitants
2. Soldiers and Sailors
- The census is organized by County and Town.
- Index only the data posted with names. Be aware that at various places in the books, enumerators have summarized numerical data and listed it in tabular form. This type of data is not to be indexed. Simply ignore it.

How to Get Help:
- These training materials describe the most common situations you will encounter as you index the Wisconsin 1885 State Census. However, new issues may surface, and you may have questions that are not answered here. If so, first contact your stake extraction director. Your stake extraction director can then contact Church headquarters. Together we can get you the help you need and revise the instructions, if necessary.
