US History in 1905

  • The city of Las Vegas, Nevada, was formed with the sale of one hundred and ten acres in the downtown area.
  • The Rotary Club of Businessmen was founded with the first chapter in Chicago, Illinois.
  • The "Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition" opened in Portland, Oregon.  The world's fair hosted eighteen nations and three colonies, and closed on October 15 with attendance of 1.7 million visiting its 402 acre site.

Wisconsin History around 1905

  • Robert M. La Follette led the Progressive Movement in Wisconsin.  During La Follette's governorship (1900-1905), the legislature established direct primary elections (giving voters the right to choose primary candidates rather than party officials), doubled the taxes on railroads, broke up monopolies, preserved the state's forests, and defended small farmers.
  • Dairy had surpassed wheat as the chief farming product, when by 1899 more than 90 percent of Wisconsin farms kept cows.  
  • The Allis-Chalmers Company helped build Milwaukee’s world reputation as the center of heavy machinery for mines, power plants, and public utilities.
